Companionship, medication timing, mobility support and the patience the work actually takes.
Caring for a parent at home is different from childcare in one decisive way: the person being cared for has opinions about it, and often did not ask for it. A helper who is warm with children can still be wrong for a grandmother who resents needing help.
What matters most is temperament and language. Someone who can talk to your father in a language he is comfortable in, about things he cares about, will do more for him than someone more technically capable who cannot.
What the work involves
- Medication reminders and keeping to the schedule exactly
- Mobility support — walking, stairs, transfers, and preventing falls
- Personal care and dignity, at whatever level is needed
- Meals prepared to a dietary restriction
- Company: conversation, walks, and the appointment run
