Laundry and ironing
Kanduras, abayas, school uniforms and shirts — the work that is invisible until it is done badly.
Ironing is a genuine skill and it is not evenly distributed. Pressing a kandura properly, or a linen shirt without shining it, is not something everyone can do, and a scorched abaya is an expensive way to find out.
It is also the easiest skill to test. Hand her a shirt at the interview.
What the work involves
- Sorting, washing and drying by fabric rather than by pile
- Pressing kanduras, abayas and formal shirts
- Treating stains before they set, and knowing which not to attempt
- Handling delicates, and what goes to a specialist instead
- Wardrobe order — folded, hung, and seasonal rotation
